Meet the Artisan: Brittney Schulz

Written by Wesleigh Byrd
Photographed by @brittneyschulz.art

Based in Boise, Idaho Brittney Schulz lives with her husband Zachary and two young children creating landscapes and portraits inspired by the natural world around her. Experimenting with layered tones and gentle brush strokes to create an emotion, Brittney focuses less on perfection and more on translating the overarching feeling contained within the painting.

Our company is honored to carry her artwork in our shops, which you can peruse here. Without further ado, take a seat with Brittney Schulz.

Tell us about your journey. How did you become a ceramicist/artist?

A love for creating has been with me from a young age. I took that passion and began studying graphic design in college, later pursuing a degree in education. Needing to take some time away from the classroom I sought healing from picking up my paint brushes once again. From there I started The Cedarhouse, the home of my studio where I continue to create.

What inspires you daily?

Seeing the world through my children’s eyes is a source of inspiration, holding onto that magical perspective and bringing it to my studio.

3

What makes your work stand out to you?

My work focuses on a different perspective of nature, focusing on the details and the emotions found in our surroundings. Similar to my landscapes, I work on creating movement and emotion within my portraits as well.

4

What does a day-in-the-work-life look like for you?

I am thankful to have a home studio where you can often find my kids creating alongside me. My day is filled with thoughtfully packaging orders while setting aside time to create new work.

In honor of Women’s History Month, could you share who has been the most impactful woman in your life or career and why?

I have intentionally surrounded myself with strong, inspiring, loving, encouraging women that have played such a pivotal role in my family and career. Each having come into my life in such a time when their wisdom was a timely gift and blessing within my life. I believe it takes a community of women to move through life and I am very thankful for mine.
