Rug Guide: Selecting the Perfect Size For Your Room
To know us is to know we have an obsession with rugs. From Amber’s collection with Loloi, to sourcing vintage pieces, the right rug adds texture and dimension to a space.
One of the most commonly asked questions is ‘how do I choose the right rug for my space?’ While decor can impact your decision as well, the size of the rug is so important in anchoring a room. Since the latest Amber Lewis x Loloi Collection dropped this week, we thought it ‘fitting’ to share a refreshed rug size guide!
_________
Living Rooms
For living room areas, it all depends on the size of your space. A rug should be expansive enough for most of your furniture to sit on top of. As long as the front of the legs are always on the rug, you’re in good shape!
Small Living Rooms
In smaller spaces, a 5’x8’ rug that sits 6”-12” in front of the sofa anchors your space nicely and still allows for walking room around the furniture.
Medium Living Rooms
For medium to large rooms, a larger rug (8’x10’ for instance) works nicely to anchor the space when it goes partially under the sofa (back legs off the rug), but extends beyond the sides of the sofa.
Large Living Rooms
For large rooms, a 9’x13’ rug can be used to frame the whole room, with all the furniture on top of the rug. Just be sure there is still room around the outside the rug for walking, so you aren’t partially on/off the rug.
Dining Rooms
The key is to make sure the chairs still sit comfortably on the rug when pulled out and away from the table (for someone to sit in them). You don’t want chairs half on / half of a rug when pulled out.
Four-Person Dining Table
We’re talking a smaller set-up, around four chairs or less! A 5’x8′ rug should do just the trick.
Eight-Person Dining Table
For larger dining spaces that allow more seats at the table, an 8’x10′ rug should cover the space.
Bedrooms
There are many options for rug placement, but the most preferred way is to lay the rug perpendicular to the bed and pull it halfway under – stopping before your side tables. This maximizes the amount of useable rug space and gives you a soft surface to step onto when getting out of bed.
King-Sized Bed
For a king-sized bed, it’s ideal to use a 9’x12’ rug to give a nice frame to the bed and the bedroom space.
Queen-Size Bed
For a queen-sized bed, an 8’x10’ is the ideal size for framing your bed.
Full-Sized Beds & Smaller
For a full-sized bed, a 5’x8’ should suffice. In smaller bedrooms, use of an accent rug (runner) in the middle of the room or foot of the bed can add interest and help pull all the room décor together.
Hallways
For hallways, runners can come in many lengths and sizes. A good rule of thumb is to make sure your runner covers 75% of the length of the hallway, with wood / flooring showing on both ends and edges.
