In our humble opinion, art is one of those elements that can make or break a space. So let’s chat about how to do it well, shall we?!
The beautiful thing about art (and design) is that there is no cookie-cutter formula to follow in order for something to work, but we rounded up a few of our go-to tips and tricks as a general guideline. From sourcing and framing to placement and finishing touches, keep reading for everything you need to know. x
Sourcing
Not all of your art has to be the same style… search for unique, and/or antique pieces that contribute to a timeless collection and fit your vibe.
Framing
Choose frames that complement both the artwork and the room’s decor, opting for neutral tones and classic styles to enhance the piece without overpowering it.
Measurement
Before you grab a hammer, measure the wall, furniture below, and the art itself — aim for artwork that fills around two-thirds of the surrounding space. Use painter’s tape to preview your layout; this helps ensure every moment feels balanced and intentional.
Placement
Center artwork around eye level (roughly 57–60″ from the floor for most spaces) and always consider what’s below it (sofa, console, mantel). When art hangs above furniture, leave 4–8″ between the top of the piece and the surface to create a cohesive connection.
Styling
Styling artwork isn’t just about hanging — it’s about how the pieces interact with their surroundings. Play with spacing (2–4″ apart), mix frame textures while keeping a cohesive palette, and leave thoughtful negative space so each piece can breathe.
