Rug Q&A with Amber Lewis

Just in case ya missed it, Amber Lewis x Loloi Season 6 is here! While you can’t go wrong with any style from the collection, it can be overwhelming to decide on the details — Patterned or solid? Any rules on sizing? What about layering rugs?

You have #allsortsof questions, and we’ve got the answers. We sat down with Amber and ran through some general guidelines when it comes to rugs. Read on to learn more and enjoy a short  and sweet Q&A. x

1

Is mixing prints okay — Should my rug, drapery, and bedding all match?

In my humble opinion, you have to mix it up! That is a pillar of my design philosophy, actually — I’m always incorporating different patterns in a space. Soooo, no! Not all patterns in a space need to be identical and it’s actually my personal preference to sprinkle in a variety of patterns to keep things interesting.

2

Can I layer rugs or is that out of style?

Layering is cool! FUN FACT, that is actually how I got my start on social media. I used to layer vintage kilim rugs on top of jute rugs. Annnnnd this new collection is bringing us back to those roots — We have the Lilah Collection of jute rugs which are amazing. If you threw a Cambria on top, that’d make a super beautiful combo.

3

Which rug styles are best for high-traffic areas in the home?

The best rug styles for high-traffic areas are those with durable materials — both the Cambria and Lilah collections feature jute (which is my jam!) Plus the Bexley has a super wearable, low-pile texture that holds up effortlessly over time.

4

Do you prefer solid rugs or patterned rugs?

That is like asking me to choose a favorite child! I can’t choose between the two….there is no favorite. I think they can each bring a necessary element to the space — whether that be a solid piece that sets a sturdy foundation or a more intricate style that pulls together the color story.

5

Do you have any tips for using two rugs in the same space?

If you’re using two rugs in a single space, they do not have to match! I say as long as they’re tonally complementary, party on and do whatever.

6

When it comes to rugs, do you have any pet peeves?

I have a a laundry-list of pet peeves, HA! One of my biggest pet peeves is when too many furniture legs are off of a rug. My quick tip there is make sure at least two legs of every furniture piece is on the rug. Otherwise, it looks like you forgot something….or like your rug is too small. When in doubt, get a bigger rug.
