Amber’s Guide to Vintage Sourcing

In our humble opinion, no space is complete without its fair share of vintage pieces. Mixing the old with the new is what creates a balanced space full of depth, character, and unique charm (which is our jam!) This month on the blog, we’re highlighting how to source vintage, what to look for, where to shop, and as always, all the styling inspo. So read on to explore some tips from Amber and the team for vintage sourcing and shop the newest drop at Shoppe Amber Interiors. x

Make a List

While you will almost certainly not find somethin’ SUPER specific, going in with an idea of what you’re looking for is major. While we often align with the philosophy that ‘more is more’ when it comes to vintage shopping, we also believe that being intentional with your selections is key.

Measure, Measure, Measure!

Bring a measuring tape. This seems obvious, but we’ve been burned in the past when we’ve needed to make a fast decision and weren’t sure if something would fit. Think about the ideal dimensions for the piece you’re looking for… While there can be a little wiggle room, given that vintage pieces often come with more unique dimensions, know your minimums and maximums — and stick to ’em.

Saving vs. Splurging…

Vintage is not always cheap — Sometimes you have to spend some dough to get that beautiful one-of-a-kind patina we all love so much. If you are thrifty and can find a deal… GREAT! But if you see the perfect piece and it’s a little high on the budget… remember that time is money. It could take you forever to find the right piece, so be prepared to make an investment if it’s the one.

Good Bones Matter

Chipped paint and scratches? No biggie. But deep cracks, mold, or funky smells? Maybe pass. Always peek inside drawers, under cushions, or behind doors so you know exactly what you’re bringing home. A little extra inspection now can save you from regrets (or surprise repairs) later.

Trust your Guts!

This is easier said than done, but don’t be afraid to walk away! It’s easy to get swept up in the “one-of-a-kind” thrill, but if you’re hesitating, take a beat. There will always be more vintage treasures out there — and the thrill of the hunt is half the fun anyway.
