Our Guide to Pillow Pairings

If you asked us, we’d say throw pillows add the perfect finishing touch to a bed or sofa. You can create subtle texture and add a couple extra layers of comfort with pillow combinations in a variety of fabrics, colors, and patterns. While we’re far from following strict rules when building out beautiful groupings, we do have a few tips and tricks up our sleeve! So today, we’re taking a minute to chat through our guide to creating the perfect pillow pairings…

Create a color scheme

Choose cohesive shades from a “narrator” pillow that dictates the color story and go from there. Looking to keep your assortment a little more laid-back? Check out the solid pillows at Shoppe Amber Interiors as a starting point.

Mix & Match

Don’t be afraid of mixing textures and patterns. Muted florals pair well with stripes and we’ve been known to pair a boucle with a linen here and there! You can also add different sizes and shapes for a bit of added dimension — we love pairing a lumbar pillow with an oversized square.

Lean into the unexpected

As you play around with your pillows and decide what you like best, challenge yourself to think outside of the box! Not all combinations need to be uniform. For example, both sides of your sofa don’t need to have the same arrangement, or even identical pillows. While two anchor pillows can be nice and bring balance, you can also add individual pillows to either side that work well together.
