Oak Haven 1937: Amber’s Lake House Reveal

Written by Kelsey Walker
Photographed by Shade Degges

Can we get a drum roll, please?! Amber Lewis’ latest project, #oakhaven1937, is finally here! We could not be more excited to walk y’all through each room of this charming, newly-remodeled 1930’s home nestled in the tree line of Lake Arrowhead, California.

Just in case you missed the backstory of how this cozy cottage came to be — let’s do a quick review, shall we?! Amber and Mike Lewis bought the house in late 2020. The house hadn’t been touched since it was built in 1937 — besides a half-done remodel in the 80’s — and how coincidental, because it’s the character and charm of the original house that made them fall in love.

Although they bought this house in August of 2020, the remodel didn’t really begin until March of 2023. Finally in November of 2023, Amber and her team completed the install. We are so excited to fully debut this quaint lil’ place! But first, let’s take a peek at what this place looked like before…

We hope you’re prepared for this absolute transformation! But before we give you all the deets, we have a few housekeeping notes to run through…

We know you’re looking for the all nitty gritty details and we’re here to provide the answers to all of your questions! While some sources and products are noted here, stay tuned as we roll out a full paint color tour, flooring feature, and other special highlights. If something featured in an image is not noted, it is likely a vintage piece or an original detail of the home — AKA, we welcome you to use these images as inspiration instead of a shopping guide!

Secondly, we’re using the debut of this project to showcase the Shoppe Amber Interiors Winter 2024 Collection! This collection is inviting you to embrace the alluring charm of wintertime at home, a cozy season to be filled with warmth, comforting layers, and heartwarming moments. Immerse yourself in a world of soft textiles, patterned wallpapers, rustic decor, and timeless pieces. Explore all these elements and more here, where we’ve carefully crafted an all-new selection of product around the spirit of Amber’s mountain retreat, where every detail entices you to stay awhile.

So without further ado…

Living Room

Right off of the front entryway is the sweetest living room with the most stunning stone fireplace. Given that this space is one of the first impressions guests have of the home, the focus was on keeping things bright, open, and true to their original charm. The stone fireplace is an original feature of the house and immediately creates a grand and inviting feel. Amber chose to keep the vaulted ceilings and vertical shiplap on the walls, just giving the space a fresh coat of paint.

The whole room is painted with Dunn Edwards paint. It’s the perfect off-white that feels bright, but not too bright, and compliments the vaulted ceilings and wooden floors perfectly. For the floors, she went with gorgeous wooden floors from DuChateau to freshen up the space while keeping the natural feel that came with the original house. Beyond that, Amber brought in a mix of new and vintage pieces and layers on layers of texture — keeping this room a perfect balance of moody, inviting, charming, and fresh.

Dining Room

The dining room is one of our favorite rooms in the house, perhaps due to the incredible view it has of the lake — all thanks to the wall-to-wall windows that overlook the back deck. It’s towards the back of the house, but feels somewhat central as it connects the living room, mud room, and family room. Amber really values an open-concept home, which is most apparent through the design of this room. In some ways, this space feels like a sunroom due to all the natural light and a bright feel courtesy of the Dunn Edwards paint job. The flooring from DuChateau makes the room feel polished while also aligned with the beauty of the nature just right outside.

Amber loves sneaking in a dirty-martini-turned-lounge-moment where she can, and this room is no exception. The beautiful vintage bar cabinet and lounge chair bring a homey feel and vintage charm into this renovated space. As far as where Amber sources beauties like these, she loves to peruse 1stdibs, Good Livin Co, Eneby Home, Prize Antiques, and Holler and Squall among other vintage vendors. But above all, Amber loves to incorporate pieces that tell unique stories, align with her personal taste, and tie together the overall look and feel of the space.

When tearing down walls and re-designing the layout of an existing home, there are often awkward spaces left in the wake. Something Amber is best at is making every nook and cranny functional and beautiful. These corner-caddied built-ins nestled at the front of this room bring in some extra storage space while simultaneously making the transition between rooms feel smoother and more intentional.

Mud Room

What would a lake house be without a mud room? This gorgeous room sits right off the back porch and is a space as beautiful as it is functional. Given that this home includes a direct path down to the lake – where all kinds of messiness and fun happens – the inclusion of a mudroom is not only a practical way to keep the home tidy but a thoughtfully designed area that gives the home an extra bit of flow. Amber leaned into the moodiness of this cozy and dynamic space when opting for this dark green paint color from Dunn Edwards. Paired with these colorful cement tile floors from Country Floors, Amber Lewis takes bold colors and patterns to the next level. Add in patterned curtains and vintage pillows to the mix, and we’ve got a truly one-of-a-kind space on our hands.

Family Room

If you thought the view from the dining room was gorgeous, just wait until you see the view from the family room! Overlooking the lush treetops with a direct view of the lake, this room makes you want to settle in and stay awhile.

Layered up with tons of patterns and textures, the character of this room really shines through. The wallpaper chosen for this space brings in warm hues and textured layers. With vaulted ceilings, sturdy wooden beams, and a tiled fireplace, this room is as charming as can be. What makes this room so different from the living room is it’s connection to both the dining room and kitchen — making this room function as the beating heart of the home — grand, yet cozy; dynamic, yet serene.

The patterned wallpaper is wedged between original wooden beams and brand new DuChateau wood floors, making this room feel intentional and balanced. The arrangement of the furniture in this space really brings your focus to the center of the room, where the bright fireplace and antique chandelier make their debut — highlighting all the warm light and cozy ambiance of this quaint cottage.

Kitchen and Banquette

Just looking at this kitchen makes us want to cook up some homemade cobbler! Did we mention that there are apple trees on the property? Although Amber is not one for cooking, this beautiful kitchen is sure to inspire even the most timid of cooks. To neutralize the colorful cement tile floors by Country Floors and the visible family room wallpaper, Amber chose warm white and cream Dunn Edwards paint colors for the walls and cabinets. The built-in shelves above the sink make this room feel traditional, but also fresh. Styled with tons of Shoppe goodies, there is not an inch of the kitchen that hasn’t been meticulously designed for ultimate beauty and function. Paired with a large, vintage kitchen island, gorgeous vintage stools, and antique brass pots and pans, this space is the definition of modern cottage core.

But can we take a moment for this kitchen banquette? This could possibly be our favorite space in the entire house! Thanks to this custom bench, the space feels personalized without looking uniform and cold, while the vaulted ceilings and woven pendant light make it feel comfortably snug. The warm white and cream paint colors by Dunn Edwards keep this space bright while the more natural elements — like the dining chairs, dining table, banquette bench, and light fixture — keep the space at peak-level-cozy. Last but not least, we have a custom dutch door that makes this space accessible from the balcony at the front of the house and completes the outdoor-morning-coffee vibe without having to leave the comfort of this oasis.

Primary Bedroom & Bathroom

Off the back corner of the Living Room is a snug hallway, leading to the primary bedroom and bathroom. Immediately after passing through the doorframe, we’re warmly welcomed with tall vaulted ceilings and beautiful wooden beam details. Featuring a lounge space and a window seat tucked away by the side of the bed, this room makes it easy to sleep in or cuddle up with a good book on a slow morning. Layered with color and pattern to compliment the warm white Dunn Edwards paint job and natural wood elements, this room is a how-to guide for balanced design.

Beyond the lounge area of this bedroom is a bathroom full of character. Although the color palette for this bathroom is more neutral than the bedroom, the mixing and matching of patterns brings interest into this room without being overwhelming. By giving some of these original features, like the wooden vanity and vertical shiplap, a fresh coat of paint, Amber is able to bring new life into an old space. We’re sharing all the details on this stunning wallpaper, tile, and hardware below. In the meantime, we’ll be saving each of these images to our Pinterest board for our next bathroom renovation…

Secondary Bedroom & Bathroom

Now we’re heading downstairs to showcase the secondary bedroom and bathroom. This room is on the lower level and faces the back of the wooded property. Meaning, the view from this room is also a stunner. Can you imagine waking up to these gorgeous trees in the fall? This is the very reason the bed in this room is oriented as such. To match the moody vibe of this room, Amber opted for some darker décor details like these black and white patterned roman shades and velvet armchairs. The ceiling includes original beams and wooden architectural details, which Amber opted to paint a creamy gray paint color by Dunn Edwards to brighten up the space a bit. With storage space for extra linens and a beautiful lounge area to enjoy some morning coffee or tea, this secondary bedroom is the secluded getaway of our dreams.

The bathroom connected to this bedroom is just as thoughtfully designed as the rest of the home. While the bathroom is on the smaller side, Amber’s design eye prevents any space from feeling cramped or stuffy. Since this bathroom is minimal on natural light, Amber opted to brighten the space by giving the vertical shiplap on the walls a fresh coat of Dunn Edwards paint and designing a neutrally colored tile pattern for the floors. The bright white vanity countertop is balanced out by the dark wooden elements in the room, showcasing the power of vintage in making a space feel like home.

Guest Bedroom and Bathroom

And last but not least — we have the guest bedroom and bathroom. While these two spaces are not connected, showcasing them side by side really captures the art of Amber’s design — while each space is a work of art standing alone, each room is only enhanced when viewed as a part of the larger project. Forever a champion against the boring and stale guest room stereotype, Amber wanted to design this room with a little extra love. She captured the guest room feel by bringing in this rustic metal bed, but layered it up with plenty of linens to keep it feeling luxurious. This bedroom is also downstairs, where natural light tends to be harder to come by. Amber lightens up the mood of this space with a creamy Dunn Edwards paint job and neutral carpet throughout.

Who says that guest bathrooms have to be a place where your leftover toiletries and dingy bath mats go to die? Amber is reimagining guest bathrooms with this colorful and lively space. Opting for an all-new Shoppe Amber Interiors wallpaper, Paisley Wallpaper in Saffron, and some colorful shower wall and floor tile thanks to Zia Tile, the layering of color and texture in this space feels fresh and exciting.
