Let’s start from the beginning! Tell us a little about the journey that led you to where you are now.
Deepali: My journey in the world of textiles and design began over two decades ago in India, where I worked as a couture designer creating high-end collections for international buyers. However, life took me on a new path when I moved to the United States after an arranged marriage. Despite the excitement of my new life, I longed for the creative expression I had left behind in India. Amidst the unfamiliarity of a new country, I worked hard to find my path. Throughout my early days in Portland, I worked many jobs – in a fabric showroom, tile store, an antique store, and a drapery workroom. During this time, I found my love for interior design! Customers were drawn to my selections and sought my expertise for their projects. This newfound passion motivated me to open an interior design store of my own – what is now known as Filling Spaces. While the business flourished, my heart remained tied to textiles. I began designing fabrics and a pillow line, quickly gaining attention among local interior designers in Portland. I reached out to my sister Nanu in India, pursuing her to join me on this entrepreneurial journey. Together, we took a leap of faith and hired our first employee. We set out on an uncertain path, unsure of where it would lead us. As I reflect on our journey over the last 15 years, I am humbled by how far we have come. Although, there have certainly been many ups and downs! What began as a small endeavor has now grown into a thriving business, with 30 artisan employees in India – each of them significantly contributing to our shared vision of creating unique, sustainable luxury through traditional craftsmanship and high-quality natural fibers. I am grateful for the opportunity to blend my cultural heritage with a modern lifestyle.
Nanu: If it weren’t for Deepali, I honestly don’t know where I would be today. Her passion, creativity, and determination have not only inspired me but have also paved the way for our shared success. I knew we could create something truly special together. Deepali’s vision and expertise in textiles and design provided the foundation upon which we built our business.

What inspires you? How have your passions and interests changed over the course of your career?
Deepali: My past has always been a powerful source of inspiration, shaping the person I am today. Growing up and working in India, I love the beauty of traditional craftsmanship and the allure of fashion. These early influences instilled a deep appreciation for quality design and attention to detail. I’m lucky enough to have traveled the world with my family. It has been a transformative experience, allowing me to immerse myself in diverse cultures, landscapes, and design aesthetics. Whether I’m exploring bustling cities or remote villages, I find beauty in the unexpected and draw inspiration from the world around me. My travels with my family have become a cherished source of creativity, growth, and connection. They remind me of the boundless possibilities beyond my comfort zone and inspire me to continue pushing the boundaries of design excellence. Both my past and present continue to shape and enrich my passion.
Nanu: My inspiration comes from my two-year-old daughter, Adha. Her boundless energy and infectious laughter remind me of the pure joy that exists in every moment. Her life is a motivation to cherish each experience and approach life with curiosity and wonder. Additionally, my sister Deepali’s passion for creating our business authentically has been profoundly inspiring. Despite our financial and emotional challenges in childhood, Deepali’s determination to pursue her dreams with integrity and authenticity never wavered. As our business has grown and flourished over the years, my passion and interests have evolved. The success of Filling Spaces has allowed me to explore new avenues of creativity and refine my skills.

What does your day-to-day entail?
Deepali: I typically get the kids dropped off at school in the mornings before I head to our studio in Portland. Once at the studio, I dive into a flurry of tasks! From responding to emails and coordinating with our team, to developing new designs, handling incoming orders, shipping orders, and planning photoshoots, my plate is certainly full. Each day presents new challenges and opportunities. Evenings follow a similar rhythm, but with a few personal rituals sprinkled in. After a workout to clear my mind and recharge my energy, I have a long FaceTime session with Nanu. Despite the distance, we remain deeply connected. We spend this time working on upcoming collections, designs, and orders with meticulous attention to detail. I may be physically in Portland, but I am virtually present in every aspect of our business.
Nanu: My day begins with heading to the gym for my favorite Bollywood workout, putting me in the perfect mood to tackle whatever challenges come my way. Then, I head to the studio where I spend my day answering emails, overseeing ongoing production, and collaborating closely with Deepali on every aspect of the business.

What is your favorite part about running a family business?
Deepali: My favorite part about running a family business is undoubtedly the deep connection and understanding that comes from working with my sister – we really share a special bond. Nanu’s ability to translate my vision into reality with meticulous attention to detail amazes me. Beyond the professional realm, working with Nanu allows me to relive our cherished memories and shared childhood experiences. As siblings, we have always shared a special bond. Now, as business partners, that bond has only grown stronger.
Nanu: Working with family is a beautiful experience filled with ups, downs, laughter, tears, and an unbreakable bond forged through shared experiences. While we may have our moments of disagreement and frustration, those moments soon are outweighed by the deep connection and understanding that comes from growing up together. As siblings, Deepali and I have witnessed each other’s triumphs and struggles. We have weathered the storms of life together – navigating the good, the bad, and the ugly. In the midst of it all, working side by side with my sister allows me to savor every moment with gratitude.

What advice would you offer to other female leaders in the business world?
Deepali: Authenticity is so essential to success. Stay true to your values, passions, and unique perspective. When you pour your heart and soul into what you love, there’s no limit to what you can achieve. Business is constantly evolving, and it’s essential to adapt to changes in the market and industry. While looking to a successful business for inspiration is natural, avoid the temptation to replicate their business models. Instead, focus on developing your approach and offering something that sets you apart from the competition. Finally, Success takes time! Overnight success is rare and often results from years of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Don’t be discouraged by slow progress or setbacks along the way. Stay focused on your goals and keep pushing forward, knowing that success will come with time. Hold tight to your persistence and originality.
Nanu: As our mom wisely advised, chasing after money may bring temporary gains, but pursuing your true passion leads to lasting fulfillment and success. Every moment, both good and bad, contributes to your growth and shapes your journey toward success.

What are some foundational differences of Filling Spaces that make your products stand out from the rest?
Deepali: In-house design and manufacturing! Unlike many companies that outsource design and manufacturing, we handle every aspect of the process in-house. This allows us to maintain complete control over quality, consistency, and creativity from start to finish. We prioritize ethical practices in every aspect of our business, from materials to treating our artisans and employees with respect and dignity. Safe working conditions and sustainable production set us apart in an industry often plagued by exploitation. Each product is a custom creation, meticulously crafted with attention to detail and a commitment to excellence. We refuse to compromise on quality, using only the finest materials and craftsmanship to ensure that every item meets our high standards.
Nanu: Exceptional customer service! Outstanding customer service is the cornerstone of a successful business. With teams in Portland and India, we can provide unparalleled support and assistance to our customers, no matter where they are. From personalized recommendations to prompt responses to inquiries, we go above and beyond to ensure that every customer’s experience with Filling Spaces is exceptional.
