Recipe: Mulled Wine

Photographed by Jennifer Pallian

In case you didn’t already know, we like to have a good time over here. And to us, that usually involves a few cocktails or a couple glasses of wine. And while we’re spending so much time at home, our bars are fully stocked!

There’s no adult drink that screams “the holidays” quite like a cup of mulled wine. If you don’t know what mulled wine is, it’s basically festive red wine, and you only need a few ingredients to make it. Get out your pot and put it on the stove, and send us a virtual cheers when it’s ready!

Mulled Wine

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 10 minutes
Serve: 4-5
INGREDIENTS:

1 bottle of red wine

3 oranges

Orange zest

1 cup of apple juice

5 star anise pods

3 cinnamon sticks

1 tsp. whole cloves

Brandy (optional)

Instruction:
  1. Pour the entire bottle of wine, apple juice and juice from 2 oranges in a pot over low heat.
  2. Slice the third orange into rounds and toss them into the pot. (PS. Blood Oranges are in season and look extra pretty!)
  3. Add in cinnamon sticks, star anise, whole cloves, orange zest and orange peels.
  4. Simmer for 5-10 minutes, then strain and serve. Garnish with star anise, cinnamon stick and orange peel. Top off each cup with a splash of brandy (optional).
#ASOHACKS
  • Use a full-bodied, bolder red (i.e. Cabernet Sauvignon), so the flavor doesn’t get lost.
  • No need to use a super expensive bottle.
  • In a rush? Use spiced apple cider to avoid buying all the spices. But still use orange slices / stars of anise / cinnamon for garnish.
  • Or, just buy a pre-made spice kit, like this!
