In case you didn’t already know, we like to have a good time over here. And to us, that usually involves a few cocktails or a couple glasses of wine. And with family and friends starting to trickle into your homes over the next couple of weeks, you better get that bar stocked up.

There’s no adult drink that screams “the holidays” quite like a hot cup of mulled wine. If you don’t know what mulled wine is, it’s basically festive red wine. You only need a few ingredients and it’s ready in no time. It’s a crowd pleaser, you can make it look beautiful, or just chug it right down. Get out your pot and put it on the stove, because we’re coming over for a cup!

Mulled Wine

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 10 minutes
Serve: 4-5

1 Bottle of Red Wine

3 oranges

orange zest

1 cup of apple juice

5 star anise pods

3 cinnamon sticks

1 tsp Whole cloves

brandy (option)

  1. Pour the entire bottle of wine, apple juice and juice from 2 oranges in a pot at low heat.
  2. Slice the third orange into rounds and toss them into the pot. (PS. Blood Oranges are in season and look extra pretty!)
  3. Toss in cinnamon sticks, star anise pods, whole cloves, orange zest and orange peel.
  4. Once the wine is warm, strain and serve. Garnish with star anise, cinnamon stick and orange peel. Top off each cup with a splash of brandy (optional).
  • Use a fuller, bolder red (i.e. Cabernet Sauvignon), so the flavor doesn’t get lost.
  • No need to use a super expensive bottle.
  • In a rush? Use spiced apple cider to avoid buying all the spices. But still use orange slices / stars of anise / cinnamon for garnish.
  • Or, just buy a pre-made spice kit, like this!
